Established in 1793 by the French Republic, the Louvre Museum,
in the company of the Ashmolean Museum, the Dresden Museum and the
Vatican Museum, is one of the earliest European museums. Divided
into 7 departments, the Louvre collections incorporate works dating
from the birth of the great antique civilisations right up to the
first half of the XIXth century, thereby confirming its encyclopedic
vocation.
Collections to view here include: Oriental antiques
/ Islamic Art / Egyptian Antiques / Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities
/ Sculptures / Objets d' art, Paintings / Prints & Drawings
/ History of the Louvre and Medieval Louvre / Arts and civilisations
of Africa Asia, Oceania and the Americas. You will find detailed
information on these collections within their web site, you can
even take a QuickTime virtual stroll around the museum itself.
If you are lucky enough to visit in person you will
find much more than beautiful and inspiring art galleries . The
Auditorium for example hosts art conferences and lectures, and is
equipped with its own cinema. The Louvre also provides guided tours
and workshops.
If you need to track down any specific piece exhibited
then an extensive data base, named Atlas, is available online and
allows the consultation of around 29000 works of art exhibited in
the Louvre.
Featured artists and works over the course of this coming
year include:
Primaticcio, Rosso Fiorentino
featuring The Death of Christ, Bernardo Bellotto,
Paintings from the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Piotr Michalowski
, Masterpieces from the collection of Edmond de Rothschild,
Drawings and engravings from the 15th to the 18th centuries, Ludovico
Carracci. For photographic enthusiasts there is an exhibition
by Patrick Faigenbaum. Other scheduled exhibitions
include : Romanesque France 950- 1150, Florentine drawing under
the last Medicis, Ceramics in Antiquity and 30 Masterpieces of Islamic
Art.
